Charlottesville and Norfolk, three hours east

Norfolk is the long one. It earns the drive when a fare is substantially better, when a cruise sails from the Half Moone terminal, or when family logistics make the coast the sensible end of the trip.

Driving east to ORF

The route follows I-64 the length of the state, through Richmond and Williamsburg, before the Hampton Roads crossing decides how the last half hour goes. Three hours is typical; the bridge-tunnel is the one part of the drive nobody should gamble on, so it gets its own allowance in the departure time.

Because this is a long run at a fixed price, it is also the route where a meter would hurt most. Ours is agreed before you leave Charlottesville.

Coming back from Norfolk or a cruise

Cruise arrivals empty a terminal all at once, which is a difficult moment to find a car for a three-hour trip. Booked in advance, yours is already waiting. The same applies to flights into ORF late in the evening.

We handle the luggage volume that comes with a week at sea, and the trip home is one vehicle at one price rather than a scramble for two.

Common questions

Is Norfolk ever worth three hours from Charlottesville?
When the fare gap is large, or when you are sailing from the Half Moone terminal, yes. Otherwise Richmond usually wins on time.
Can you collect a group off a cruise?
Yes, and it is worth booking early — a whole ship disembarks within a couple of hours, and cars in the area are spoken for quickly.
How do you handle the tunnel?
With buffer built into the departure time rather than optimism. We check conditions before leaving Charlottesville.
