Charlottesville and Richmond International, an hour apart

Richmond is the airport most Charlottesville travellers end up using when the fare matters. Seventy miles east on I-64, more nonstops than CHO, and often enough saving per ticket to pay for the drive several times over.

Driving east to RIC

The route is I-64 the whole way, joining at Pantops or Shadwell and coming off at the airport exit east of Richmond. Seventy minutes is the usual door-to-terminal figure, and the two places it goes wrong are the Zion Crossroads stretch during weekday commuting and the Short Pump corridor, where the interstate narrows and a small incident backs traffic a long way.

We set departure time around the day of the week rather than the mileage, which is why a Tuesday pickup leaves earlier than a Sunday one for the same flight.

Landing at RIC, heading to Charlottesville

This is one of our most-booked directions. You land at Richmond, walk out, and the car is there — no rental counter queue, no hoping an app accepts a seventy-mile trip at eleven at night, which is a request many drivers decline because the return leg is empty.

We watch the inbound flight, so a delay out of Atlanta or Charlotte moves the pickup automatically. Drop-offs go anywhere in the area: the Grounds, the hospital, Pantops, Crozet, or the county.

Common questions

Is the drive to Richmond worth it over flying from CHO?
Often, yes. When RIC saves a few hundred dollars per ticket — common on connections and peak dates — the drive pays for itself, particularly for two or more travellers.
How early do we leave for a morning flight out of RIC?
We work back from your departure and add real buffer for I-64, then a little more on weekday mornings. You will have the exact time in your confirmation the night before.
Do you also do RIC to Charlottesville?
Constantly — it is one of our busiest runs. Send the flight number and we will be at arrivals when you land.
